Our Story

We know God is good.

Grief & Grace was born out of a valley our family never expected to walk. After the death of our five-year-old son, Caleb, we experienced a depth of sorrow we had never known.

“You are good and do good.”

Psalm 119:68
The Kellso family together

On October 12, 2020, our family entered a valley we never imagined we would walk. We were spending time together at our family ranch. It had been a wonderful week filled with the ordinary joys of family life. We enjoyed hunting, riding quads, playing games, and making memories together. Then, in a moment, everything changed. In a tragic accident, our youngest son, Caleb, died at five years old.

As we desperately tried to save his life, one truth came to mind and from our mouths: We know God is good. Those words did not make the moment less painful. They did not answer every question or remove the terrible reality of what was happening. They were an anchor of truth our hearts needed when everything around us seemed to be giving way.

We did not know what the days ahead would hold. But we knew the character of our God.

Grace in the Valley

The death of a child divides life into a before and an after. We had entered a depth of sorrow we had never known, and there was no way to return to the life we had lived before.

Yet we did not enter that valley alone.

God met us through the truth of His Word. Scripture gave us something firmer than our changing emotions and deeper than the questions we could not answer. It reminded us that God remained sovereign, wise, loving, and good even when His purposes were painful and beyond our understanding.

God also cared for us through His people. Our church, family, and friends wept with us, prayed for us, served us, and carried burdens we did not have the strength to carry ourselves. Through them, we experienced the tangible care of the body of Christ.

And God sustained us with the hope of eternity. Because Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose victorious over the grave, death does not have the final word. The hope of the Christian is not that this life will be free from sorrow, but that Christ has conquered sin and death and will one day make all things new.

Our grief was and remains very real. But God’s grace has been a constant in our lives too.

Why Grief & Grace Exists

In the years since Caleb’s death, God has given us a growing desire to walk alongside others who are grieving.

We know that every loss is different. We would never claim to understand everything another person is experiencing simply because we have experienced deep loss ourselves. But we do understand something of the loneliness, exhaustion, confusion, and sorrow that can accompany grief. We also know the steadying power of God’s Word, the importance of His people, and the hope found in Jesus Christ.

Grief & Grace was created to provide biblical care and compassionate community for people walking through loss. Grief changes us, exposes our weakness, and often leaves us with questions that cannot be neatly answered.

But sorrow does not place us beyond the reach of God’s grace.

Our desire is to help grieving people bring their sorrow honestly before the Lord, interpret their experience through the truth of Scripture, receive care from the body of Christ, and continue walking faithfully even when that walk is slow and difficult.

You Are Not Meant to Walk Alone

If you are grieving, we are deeply sorry for the loss that has brought you here. You may feel overwhelmed. You may have questions you cannot answer or emotions you do not know how to express. You may simply be trying to make it through the next day. You do not need to walk through it alone.

There is grace for the valley. Not grace that makes loss insignificant, but grace that sustains us in our sorrow. Not grace that answers every question, but grace that holds us when answers do not come. Not grace that asks us to deny the pain of death, but grace that points us to the One who has conquered it.

We know the valley can be deep. But we also know God is good.
